Default Vanguard question

I have a 3165 that won't run and doesn't have much spark if any and that is how I purchased it. I pulled the tins from around the flywheel and everything looked good, no chewed or shorted wires and ordered two new mag's. I did not install them yet, but they ohm out the same and one of the two that was on it looks new. I did not check the gap but it looks hard to set because the magnet barely reaches both sides of the mag. Does the pic look normal? The instructions said to use 3 thicknesses of the paper to set the gap so that is what I will try. Am I missing anything else?

Looks OK this is a 16HP I worked on a couple years ago. Just get the gap set right. Check out the kill wire harness, it should have a diode in it.

Okay, I'm lost. I put in the new mags, set the gap at 3 sheets of paper like the instructions said and put in new plugs. I did get it to run but it was running like crap. I had to crank it for 10 to 15 seconds to get it to fire everytime. I let it run at WOT for a little, I don't think it was anywhere near 3600 rpm and then pushed it to idle and it pukes fuel out the top of the carb and then floods out. I played around trying to get it to run better but now it won't run and there isn't any spark. I can hold the end of the plug in my hand and turn it over. Could there be a problem with the flywheel magnet or a broken keyway? The original kill wire had a diode in each wire and one side was shorted but the other was okay. The new kill wire that came with the non-oem mags does not have a diode. What does it do and why don't the new ones have them?

I was reading an engine manual, it said the magnet should attract a screwdriver from 1" away.

Got it figured out! The kill wire that goes between the mags has a diode in each coil, the new wires that came with the new mags didn't have them and it would cause them to sometimes not fire. I pulled the kill wires off and it runs good. The original harness had a shorted diode causing it not to fire and that was the problem with it. I just need to order a new harnes with the diodes now and put the original mags back in. Can someone explain why they are in there?

Yep, you did. The new harness that came with the new mags looked just like the original but didn't have them in there so I figured it was a newer design, I was wrong. I purchased the Vanguard manual with the mags and it doesn't explain anything about them and overall I'm not impressed with the manual. Looks like I'll be ordering a harness today.

It bugged me all day at work so I made my own harness and put in some RadioShack diodes rated at 1.5 amps/1000 volts. Put it all back together and everything works like it should now.
