K161 oil breather

I am purchasing a K161 for my "mystery cub" and the seller tells me it has an air filter on it instead of the stock oil breather. First, what is the difference, and second, is it going to hurt the engine to run with an air cleaner or should I locate an oil breather before attempting to start it?

The Original came with an oil bath type air cleaner for the carb, he's probably saying that it's just got the paper filter on it instead. My Original has it too instead of the oil bath type and there's no issues. The paper filter was standard for the 70 anyway, the Original was the only one to use the oil bath.

Now this leads me to concern that, you are probably buying the k161 from an Original. Those with more engine swap experience, will the k161 from an original work in a 70?? I would think that it should but I've never looked at a 70 so I couldn't really say.

I may be wrong, but I do not think that a K161 from an Original will fit in a 70, I think the oil pans are different. Where in the Original the engine sat above the frame rails, and in the 70 the engine sits between the frame rails.

Yes, I think you are right, and IIRC, the oil pans are different because of the dipstick tubs is under the S/G on a 7HP from an original tractor, and the frame would have to be notched, to make it fit in a 70, because of how different the motor mounts.

Unless you are going for the historically correct air cleaner (oil bath) for restoration purposes, the paper air filter upgrade will work just fine.

I have determined with further investigation that a k161 from an Original WILL work in a 70, however you WILL need a notch cut for the oil dipstick/filler. It was in a different location on the Original than on the 70.

With the frame of your 70 already being in the condition that it's in, I don't think a small notch for a dipstick will hurt very much

It will fit, but how are you going to drain out the oil? Did the seller send you pictures of what you were buying or tell you that it came out of an Original?
