That's just the other end of the trans input shaft. It's splined on the supers and most of the cyclops tractors, and is just a 5/8" shaft with a spirol pin hole on all the standard-frame tractors. The rear PTO would be run by that shaft...but it's nothing special, they all have that.

Nice look'n 982! The PO added power steering to it? Wow, mine steers like a dream....no need for power steering. Just wondering...since this has a black front axle does that mean it is one of the later 982's built with some IH parts and some MTD parts??? Confusing because the rear axle is red....??

Great buy! You will love it!!

MH - The 982 doesn't have the power steering my 1862 does. As I've been doing my research, my 982 seems to be a 'tweener. 700,000 and above are CCC, but 700,000-719,999 seem to still have the cast iron rear end. My SN is 717,xxx.

The PO told me the battery may be bad, so when I went to start it this am, she didn't want to start. I put my meter on it and it was 12.xx. I pulled the ground cable, cleaned and area on the pan and the cable. Seems to have done the trick. While I was there I pulled the seat, pan and shaft cover. Cleaned a few years of built up muck from the hydro pump and I think I may have got my rear end leak fixed. While I was at it, I found that the connector on the neutral safety switch broke off. Right now the left rear wheel is off with a catch pan under the axle tube. If it's clean tomorrow, I'll take her for another ride to ensure it's stopped. Need a fuse holder cap and then I'll tackle the lights.

I downloaded and printed the manuals and see (very clearly) how the rear pto set up.

Weaverama - careful what you wish for. The plan I laid out for my wife when I bought this was to clean it up, tune it up, and put on a fresh coat of paint and sell it! At least that's what I told her!!!!!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
