1641
Is there any common mechanical or electrical problem w/ the vanguard in a 1641? The owner says it was running fine now only fires on one cyl. his friend looked at it and said needs new engine. but did no tests! He is looking to sell what might a 1641 be worth?

Do you own this tractor? If so check to see if you have spark to both cylinders. It has 2 mags one for each cylinder. I worked on one a couple years ago that mice had built a nest in the blower housing and they ate one of the plug wires. They will go well over 1000 hours if they have been maintained. Check the plugs, do a leak down test on it. If it does need a new engine and your trying to get a value if the tractor is in nice shape I’d look to pay around $300.00 then I’d try to find a 2160 with a bad trans and pull the engine out of it and drop it into the 1641.

I am looking to buy it, he wants 450. I think he is way high, I don't pay much more than 150 for tractors. There is not very many cubs around here! My thinking was spark as well but some OHV motors drop seats or other valve trouble.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
