Default Coil went kaput

I can't believe this coil finally quit. It's been nursed since it was brought into my dad's garage, handed down to me and nursed some more. Now I'm saying "uncle". it used to run a K161T on a "O". The wire was yanked out at some point and just shoved back into the coil. It ran fine for a while, until the wire worked itself out. I glued it back in and it ran for probably 10-15 yrs. this past winter it sat idle. I just put it back on the tractor, fastened everything back down, and no spark. I ran a continuity test on the wire and nothing. I haven't checked anywhere yet, but what are the odds there's another coil out there that works? I'm just plumb tired of all that pulling. I really would like to swap it over to elec. start. I've spent too much already on pulley cups and recoil parts. I may entertain getting another engine also. Any thought from the cub guru's sure would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Rick

Why don,t you just stop into your local NAPA store and buy a new coil. 20 dollar bill will take you all the way. Make sure you get one with an internal resistor. I think I paid 18$ last fall for a new coil.

OOPS Lew not very familiar with rope start cubs. Isn't it considered a magneto if it is behind the flywheel ?

darkminion, you are correct about the coil behind the flywheel. i also discovered last nite the two clips that hold the coil on to the magneto are gone. i don't remember having them off. is it possible they flew off during use and were eaten by the flywheel? the recoil sub-frame is broken as well. i'm not sure if it's worth replacing all these parts that are nla. doesn't your 72 have a recoil? do you know of anyone that purchased the recoils offered by the sponsors? i'm thinking of going that route but need to know for sure that they will work. i'm wondering if the dog setup is the same.

I did a little googling and discovered a few people have used a Tecumseh magneto (30560) on these engines. I have not tried this myself and I have no idea if it'll work, but it might be something to look into.

matt, thank you for your input. i have a huge box of spare techumseh parts i can rumage through too. is there a possibility that the condensor wire is grounding out? or maybe because these are original wires that voltage is going astray? (by original i do mean old and hardened, brittle plastic for insulation) results on the multi meter show point break, that is how i came up with foiled coil now as well as in the past.

ricks,
My 72 is missing the subframe for the recoil and the pulley for the belt.I may still have a coil off a 8hp,not sure if it will work on a 7hp,have to check the parts manuals...

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
