Jon,
I can say that there a few here that can match your knowledge. However, your people skills are a bit under range. No offense intended. I feel that you are aware of this already and quite honestly, sometimes I find myself literally laughing out loud as I read some of your comments that are rude, but entertaining. I'm not saying that what you are writing isn't true at times, but some things are better left unsaid. Again, no offense intended because I can relate. About 4 years ago, my employer sent me to some training in our area that was titled "How to Communicate with Diplomacy and Tact". I asked why I was being sent to this training, and was told that I could use a bit of help in delivering the truth to some of my fellow employees. Apparently everyone at work thought that I could be an asshole at times. Long story short, I didn't learn much from the class itself, but I did become much more aware of my situation, and I have tried to be more cordial ever since. You are an intelligent fellow, and many folks who have intelligence often lack patience with people who don't understand what they do. Just see it as your job to teach them and that you are doing what coop said, and helping bring one more cub back to life. After all, that is what we all have in common.

Tim338,
Tell us a bit about yourself--your skills and experience level. That will help us provide meaningful support. Based on your effort to replace the wiring harness, it would seem you've got some experience with this stuff?

It will probably be the weekend before I get a chance to look at it again. About myself. I love old iron. I have a really nice metal shop with a lathe, mill and know how to use them well. I love to tinker in my spare time I got the cub 72 for free it had sat in a barn for the past 23 yrs. I replaced the head gasket, points, plug, condenser, plug wire, coil, rebuilt the carb and replaced the muffler. I found a nice set of fenders and found the right seat for it. I had it running great until the harness swap but I'll get it figured out. Also the cub came with a 38" mowing deck that is in great shape.

Small update... I traced all wires in harness and everything was hooked up right except solenoid. Hooked that up right and still nothing. I jumped the solenoid by running wire to positive side of battery to the small post on solenoid and it turned over and started. Might be a dumb question does this mean my solenoid is bad? OR could it mean the keyed starter switch is bad? I welcome any input.

You will have to trace the start path from the key switch through the clutch brake switch to the solenoid coil (small post on solenoid) There’s only 3 wires on the keyswitch. Battery in, run out to ignition coil, and start. Do you have a meter or a test light to verify?

So in the start position I should have 12v going into the clutch switch and with the clutch in the down position it should pass the 12v to the small post on the solenoid right? If there isnt 12v on the start side then its the switch right? Sorry for all the questions, wiring is my weakness.

Yep, should have 12V to the small terminal. You can test this by disconnecting (to be safe) the connected small wire, then jumping 12V from the 12V battery post to the small post on the solenoid. With the switch in the ON position it should crank and start. I think* this is what you did , and it worked. Before blaming the switch (which is what it's sounding more like) make sure that the connections to the switch itself are good (pull 'em off, make sure you can read voltage in the connector housing. If so, seat and reseat the connections a bunch of times to make sure that they are mating well. Bypass the clutch connection for the time being too...make sure THAT is not causing you problems. We're all assuming you have a test light or a DC Voltmeter ....... do you?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
