Hydro Destroyed?
I figured that I might as well change the hydro fluid and filter while I was fixing the CV joint on my 1864. Got it all back together and moved it around the garage and everything seemed OK. No leaks etc.
I started it up to move it back into the garage. When I tried to go forward it made a nasty sound and it would not go forward, it would go backwards. Then I realized that it was spraying hydro fluid all over the place. I could not see anything obvious with the tunnel cover off. Maybe it is just a bad relief valve? Has anyone seen something like this? Fortunately I have a spare. It should be a lot of fun cleaning up the driveway tomorrow.

The forward pressure relief valve failed completely. All the internal part are sitting in the hydro. Fluid was shooting out the top of the valve at high pressure. I was able to pull the valve without taking the fender off. I cannot see into the hydro to see where the parts went. Hopefully they did not cause more damage. I need to figure out if the valve was bad or did something cause it to fail. More to come.

I had one do that and all the pieces were contained below the valve. I think you might be able to retrieve the parts with a skinny magnet. Good luck.

I wonder why that happened...??? Was the relief valve
previously rebuilt?

Thanks Richard. I made a magnetic retriever and got all the parts out. I put in a spare valve and fired it up. Seems OK so far.
The bad valve might have been a rebuilt one, but I am not sure. Now I need to figure out the best way to clean the concrete that is stained from the hydro fluid?

I would start with a layer of Cat litter (clay type) to suck some of the oil up , then a detergent wash and finally a degreaser

You can pull the 2 plugs on the bottom of the pump, they are directly below the valves.

Sam Mac,
I realized that I could have just removed the bottom plug just as I was pulling the last part out with the magnet. I blame old age

Oil dry and a hard wood block the sooner the better.
Go at it like you were an old scrub maid until the oil dry turns to dust and keep rubbing. Sweep up the dust, spray w/brake parts cleaner or carb cleaner, hit with a wire brush, rub it in and repeat as needed. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
