Thanks. Just want to get the drive cup off, not the flywheel. The cup is loose (wobbles) on the crankshaft, but wont come off , so as I mentioned I will use a puller for cup. Still no sign of the washer after the nut came off, unless it is stuck in the cup. Onward. Thanks for all the responses !

The drive cup came off with the puller. Fairly easy procedure. However the cup was not centered on the crankshaft, and while it was wobbling on the shaft the soft aluminum shaft hole was hammered into the threads on the crankshaft and left thread impressions in the hole of the cup. It looked like the cup may never have been centered on the shaft, and if it wasn’t it would explain a lot. The cup will not install past the first few threads on the crankshaft, so I found a fair price for a NOS cup and grass screen, and am waiting for that. Onward.

Sounds like the locating pin was broken off.
The remains of which are likely still embedded in the flywheel??
Better check that
No way it could have been off center with the locating pin intact and inserted in its corresponding hole in the flywheel.
That's why it is there, to align everything.

The locating pin was not broken. The cup does not go into the flywheel, it mounts flush to a flat face on the flywheel. It is, should be, centered by the hole in the center of the cup. That hole is out of round, beaten up, and now can not center the cup on the shaft. Thanks, Steve

Well then someone must have not torqued the nut properly for that scenario to have happened.

The loose cup is a recent thing, within the last year. I have had the cub for 15 years, and have replaced the entire drive line at one time or another, and noticed the drive cup was loose when I was checking the drive coupling so I think the PO, or the Cub dealer that serviced it may be the source of this problem. It’s still a mystery why there was no washer under the crankshaft nut, and why
I can’t find in any parts diagram. And that’s all I know about that. Thanks !

They don't show it, but it's listed. It probably broke in half and fell out. Then the missing space taker upper created your current situation.

What the heck is a “Lt” lock washer, described in Ironman’s earlier post ?

Installed the new flywheel cup/grass screen with the old nut and new “thick” washer. No signs any washer was ever there , just a strange looking nut with vertical slices in it, maybe a locknut ? Torqued it to 60 ft/lb, and it went well. I put a little blue loctite on the crankshaft threads, because no lock washers were used. Seems like the very helpful parts list Ironman offered mentioned an, Lt locking washer, which was probably part of a replacement group, so loctite will have to do for now. Thanks for all the help !
