You can't use the 682 sheetmetal on a 149 frame. They are very different towards the front. You will need 582 clutch parts, which unfortunately happen to be harder to find and more expensive than all of the others. You will also need to add a pillow block bearing at about the midpoint of the driveshaft if you are extending the frame 24 inches.

I just pulled both frames out side by side I see the differances now and realize the 682 grill/hood/cover wouldn't work. Seems I never notice that much of a differance before, but 2 bare frames side by side and the differance is pretty significant.

anybody got an old 582 laying around? LOL

Mike

Here is one, but it isn't close to you. There are also some clutch parts for a 582 on ebay.

That is about all the help I can give you. My head is still spinning from reading about all the different frames. I thought as you, that there where just wide frames and narrow. Man, when I thought I was getting a handle on some of this you guys had to go and throw a wrench in it all.

Mike,

Being that you intend to stretch the frame anyway, and you have the two frames side by side, is it possible that you can add the front frame rails from the 682 to the 149 frame?

Personally before you spend the money on the overdrive gears, I would look at using the 154 clutch and main shaft. without the reducion housing on the trans the input is lower physically and you could set up a 2:1 chain reduction off the motor to run a drive haft back to the clutch/trans. without the front cadet reduction you are the same as a Fcub your motor is just going to be twice as fast so you reduce it to half as much before you get to the trans. It is easy to convert a cadet trans over to a 154 input, I may even have all the parts you will need (couple bearing retainers and a bearing cap)

I was thinking about that, but I'm not sure where the clutch parts attach to the frame at, all the wide frame tractor I have are hydros. I have a 582 special that had the peerless trans that I converted to hydro when the trans broke. so I have no what the clutch connects too.

that would be great, you might have to walk me though the process though, I've been into a hydro but never been in a Cub cadet gear drive, I know the ring gear and pinion are the same as a farmall cub, My dad has used them to replace worn out gears in differant cubs several times. Thank you!!!!!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
