Default Snow Thrower not “Throwing”

Bought my first Cub this past summer, the 1650 came with QA-42A and was super excited to get going this winter. Had to put new bearings and seals in the gearbox and get a new 4” pulley. We’ve had two snowfalls with just a couple of inches with each one (one was wet / heavy and the other was powder). The problem I’m having is for the most part snow comes out of the chute and is falling on the blower deck— not really throwing it, but seems to be spinning at a good speed.

Could it be the snow just wasn’t deep enough

Could I have accidentally swapped the gears when putting the gearbox backed together ( although read in another post that this would potentially speed the blower up)

Or should I try a 3.5” pulley.

If it wasn’t such a PITA to take the blower off and put the blade on I would have swapped it out. Trying to get it working for real snow so any thoughts would be appreciated.

Steve

The smaller the Pulley, the faster the auger goes, and throws the snow farther.
Make sure you have the correct belt, that it is tight, and that all the Auger Bearings are in good shape.

You have to keep the auger full of snow,
and the governor keeping the engine at full throttle.
Drive as fast as possible to accomplish that.

Thanks for the input guys, love this site for all the knowledge it brings. Picked up a 3.5” pulley to try out.

Does anyone know what the rpm at the auger should be (have an old RPM gauge somewhere just need to find it), would like to know it’s spinning the correct speed before there is snow on the ground. Saw in one post that spinning too fast could also cause similar issues.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
