New guy seeking input
New guy here, looks like there will be a lot of useful information here in my near future, ( maybe ). I’ve been wanting an old cub for a while. Just happen to come across a local 127 for $150. I looked at it today. Not knowing much about the older models, I had to believe what the owner told me. “It’s not running, it does have compression. Newly rebuilt starter generator, good transmission. Needs a wire harness.”
It did have some wire harness that I Think could be salvaged. Missing the choke and lift (?). The handle on the right side appears to be broken or cut off. I’m assuming that’s for the deck? I noticed a couple drops of oil underneath after rolling it back although that is the least of my worries. Is there anything specific to look out for? It’s certainly not the prettiest, but I’m not looking for show quality. I want to clean it up and put it to work. Seems like $150 is hard to go wrong, but I may be mistaken. ANY input is greatly appreciated. And I apologize if I did not post this in the correct location, it seemed most appropriate. Thanks! PS I’m an auto mechanic, so I like projects. |

I failed to mention that I have not purchased it yet. I told him I would get back to him Monday morning.

127's are nice. Just a heads up. There is a compression release on engine so you might ask him how he checked it. Does it have a deck or any other accessories with it?

No deck or other attachments. He said he wrapped a belt around the pulley and pulled it to get it to turn over backwards(?). He did mention the compression release, but I’m honestly not familiar with that technology yet. This machine is older than me!

I don't see the starter/generator! I may be cheap, but the price is a little steep. Tractor doesn't look bent, but it looks rough!

Not running. No deck. Lift handle missing, or cut off as you think. So, you would have no idea if the trans/diff is any good. There really isn't much that goes wrong with them, but chit can happen.
Plus, who knows the condition of the engine, being it's a non runner. I'd look elsewhere if he's firm on the price. But, that depends on how bad you want it, just speaking for myself is all...

Allow some wiggle room. The last 2 Cadets I bought were non-runners. Both of them put a nice hole in my wallet. One of them is still siphoning cash and repair time!!!!

Looks like it was an electric lift tractor and that stuff is all missing.
I dunno. I’d pass at $150. Maybe half that. There’s a lot to fix there to get a functional tractor, and you should be able to find a good running functional 127 for not much more than that.

Thank you guys for the input. Seeing as how I’m not very familiar with these, I was curious about the lift. Did they have electric lift with a manual backup? |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
