Default KT17S with 3 serial numbers...which is correct?

My 682 has three serial numbers in a group on the motor shroud. Is there another place with numbers?

I only see 2 serial numbers, but 3 tags.

Likely, it was replaced at some point. The big tag on the side is the newer tag. New engines didn't always come with tins, but would have came with a serial tag.

This is what you have:

M/N: KT-17S Series II
Spec No: 24302
S/N: 14005601

Which rolled out of the Factory, in 1984.

Yes..... that's correct. But if the engine has been replaced (highly likely) the new engine would have came with a new serial number and a new tag, which appears to have been placed on the tin just below the original serial number. So, the lower big tag would be the new SN.

Looks like the newest serial number you have there is from 1988 (18xxxxxxx). So it's likely that your engine was replaced with one about 4 years newer at some point.

It kinda stinks that the only place a serial number for these engines exists is on the tins. They get swapped around after rebuilds and replacements and you can never quite trust them.

I agree.

Serial number isn't really all that important anyway. Seldom do you need it. Spec number isn't a big deal either if you know the application, but it's more important than the SN because it gives the build.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
