Default 125 - Starter Generator

Hello,

Our 125's Delco Remy Starter Generator recently died and I came across a someone selling a reconditioned dixie d in our area, which I thought unusual.

They no longer have the tractor it came from and couldn't tell me the Cub model either. Sounds like it was a quite a while ago that they had the tractor.

I haven't had the time to even price out a kit for the Delco here in Canada (tired of the costly customs brokerage BS), nor the time to get a quote from one of the shops in the city for an overhaul. Waiting on a recommendation on which shop to call, or avoid. Not from the region.

The Starter for sale is a dixie d TG79

And our dead Delco is a 1101951

Could someone verify if that dixie will work on our 125 ?

And I fully expect someone to bring up that I ought to just get the Delco working rebuilt, keeping her original and all, which I plan to, but it's about time at this point.
WAY too much on the go presently and fixing this machine is very low on the totem, but the Cub was just starting some needed work, to avoid hiring work out.

ALSO, recommendations on parts suppliers for our 125 would be greatly appreciated.

Thank-you,
Gary

Good question. But not a good way to start off . . .

In the photo he sent me, it's what is printed on the tag, and the code is stamped.

According to this:
http://www.dixie-electric.com/catalo...?Num_Dix=TG-79

That is a generator, not a starter/generator. It will not work. Apparently, Dixie is a reman company. I don't know why the Google machine didn't work for you Beth. It popped up on my first try.

IF.....you are going to use Dixie Electric as your source, the correct Starter-Generator would be their Part Number 301-18102

Thanks Roland for the dixie d part no. for our 125.

And Jonathan for that reminder to always ask Google first. What could go wrong?

Incidentally, that's how I came to an ad for a "Cub Cadet Starter / Generator" on Kijiji.

After a couple days back and forth the seller finally sends an image clear enough to read the tag. In the end, no better clue other than, "the hood was square."
He's an old guy cleaning out the garage.

So there you have it. I'll be sending the Delco to town for some love.

Thank for your efforts.

Can anyone tell me the normal temperature range for a starter generator?

I was plowing a bit last night and afterwards noticed how hot the starter generator was. Too hot to grab for more than a second. I can't remember ever being concerned about its temperature before.

Thanks,
Gary

I would venture to say, there is an issue.

Did you have a lot of load on it? Like charging up a dead battery and running a lot of lights?

Make sure connections are bright and tight!

My brothers SG was doing this on his 129- fry an egg on it hot within 5 min of mowing (or less). Started smoking. It was putting out 17 volts on a good battery. Check yours running it should be about 13-14 volts. turned out his voltage regulator was bad. It will get warm (the SG) but you should still be able to touch it after running it for a long time.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
