Thumbs up 782D

I've wanted a diesel GT for a while. I have known about this one since Christmas. It was still available and I just happened to have the cash, so it's now residing in my garage tonight! Needs a myriad of things to make it super nice, but it's a good ole machine. First order of business is to do the glow plug system upgrade and the gear reduction starter upgrade. It doesn't start great even in 70 degree weather.

Congrats and it looks great! I'd get that pipe off of there and get a muffler on that thing. I have been to a few plow days with people running a straight pipes and they are pretty loud to run all day. CubDieselFan had some new ones for sale at a great price if you are looking to install one. Check the engine cooling fan bearings and drive line real good too.

Keep us posted on the updates with lots of pics.

Cool

Yes, that lil bugger is loud. It came with a new correct muffler and tip, but missing the tip clamp, and all of the shields.

Lightbulb

First on the agenda: this thing does not start well when "cold". It has the original starter and glow plugs. The glow plug indicator in the dash is fubar. I have done some research on this and think I will be going this route:

Do away with the original style glow plugs and buy the NGK Y-103V / 2031 updated units.

To properly power these up, more voltage than originally engineered will be required. I'll add a continuous duty relay, such as a glow plug relay from a mid 80's Ford F250 diesel:

I know a lot of guys use a Ford style starter relay, but I don't think they will last long term because they are a intermittent use relay.

Those glow plugs only work during starting, not all the time.
-----Just like a starter motor.

Question

The overall time of engagement should be lower with a starting relay as compared to a glow plug. Typically, they are energized for 30 seconds or more, right?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
