Default 1872 with 450 snow thrower vibration issue

Hi everyone,

I was using my snow thrower this last weekend and started getting a bad vibration, I thought that gear box was the issue so I disassembled it and nothing seems wrong, gears and bearings are good. I took a closer look at the output shaft coupling and noticed rust and wear. Not sure if this is the problem, or maybe if could be the fan unit. Since these parts are no longer available, I don't know where to turn, I was looking around and found a 451 unit for $600 but really don't need the whole thing. Since gear ratio's are different. the parts i need are the same though. Any help would be great-fully appreciated.

Corey

Are you sure it’s the blower? And i’ll Assume you completely thawed it out before you tore into it?

I would think that any bad vibration would either have to come from the belt path or the fan path since the auger doesn’t turn fast enough to vibrate much.

Gompers, thanks for the reply, the vibration stop when i turned off the PTO, the belt has no tears, i did notice oil oozing out the pulley shaft, so thats why i assuming the shaft, fan is the issue.

Thanks Corey

Do you have pictures of the fan assembly?

How do your idler pulleys look?

If it was something with the auger, it would be a slower sound I’d imagine and probably not a ton of vibration.

Is it possible you burned a belt? That can cause vibration even if it “looks” ok.

Check the fan wheel closely. Mine got a vibration all the sudden . after I took out the wheel it had a slight bend and a nick in one of the paddles it wasn't real noticeable until it was out and you noticed it once at full rpm.

Thanks for the heads up, will check it closely when i can get the fan out. As for the pulley's and such everything looks good, I think since I will have it torn down, I'll replace the bearings and seals if i can find them.

Thank you for the pointers

Corey

After a close look the fan shaft is worn out, the splines are almost gone, when i put them together on the work bench there is allot of wiggle movement between the couplings of the output shaft and fan shaft. I found the parts so now waiting for them to arrive. thank you for putting me in the right direction.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
