Default So Much For The "Walbro" WHG Myth!

When I got a 1450 with a Walbro WHG carb, I shelved the carb, because of all the stories I have heard about them.

Well, my K301 was in need of a carb, I am trying to get the original right.

I slapped the Walbro WHG "52" on the K301, and the engine works perfectly!

I did not even touch an adjuster yet

It idles
It accelerates
It has perfect power
It even appears to have a home made linkage.
The choke works backward, no biggie.

I might stick with the Walbro!!

Have you used a Walbro?

Your lucky. I tried three different walbros on my old 1650 and they all idled and seemed to rev happy. Unil I tried mowing or moving and it didn't have anywhere near he power of a 10 horse let alone a 16 once I hunted down a good kohler carb it was like a whole new machine .

that's what I always found. they run great in the shop. take them out for a drive even on a hill they fall off and don't recover well at all compared to a Kohler carb

Well, recently I have learned something about Walbo Carbs.

I was always under the impression, that the Walbro Carbs, that Cub Cadet used, were the "fixed main jet" design. Not so, the WHG series is an adjustable jet carb and Cub Cadet did use this series of Carbs on various tractor.

Now, I have not heard and positive or negative reviews on this series but it is interesting to discover this Walbro Adjustable Carb.

In my pic, the end of the choke wire is pointing to the high speed adjustment needle.

The idle needle is all the way to the left in the pic, in the same location as the Carter/Kohler.

And, of course, there is the idle speed screw.

even those don't have the torque that you get with the Carter or Kohler . We always called them wheelbro's. if you put them on a flow bench and hook up a water monometer and play with it enough you can improve them.

Question Is this a walbro?

I have been reading through threads and I cannot tell what kind of carb this is. I finally snapped a couple of pictures of it. It needs rebuilt so I was trying to figure out if I should rebuild this one or find a Kohler carb for the K301.

My FIL put a Walbro adjustable jet carb on his 149 sometime prior to his death in 1992. I have had that Cub since then and it has performed great and I have not had to do anything to it.

Well the parts 100 came with a walbro on it and i happened to have a carter on the shelf that i knew ran good but i don't fix stuff thats not broke. One evening i jumped on it like i did once and a while to mow or pull another tractor out of a hole whatever it was i dont remember now but got the the end of the drive and it dies just like you had turned off the key. So of course i check for fire it had plenty no problem said well ill change plug for good measure check timing blah blah blah... just never ever had one die of a gas problem like that before was total odd. So after all that i said well maybe its gas related... pulled breather didnt smell any gas was like weird choked it nothing was like well float must have stuck. Gave it. Love tap or too no help pulled the carb bowl while on the tractor flat was working there was gas there and put it back on same trouble, I might add the bowl was spotless no trash that i could see! Got a manual spray bottle of gas and put a squirt or too in the carb while turn it over and as long as i pumped the fuel in it would run great pulled the carb put the carter on and it run as good as it did before? Have never had that kind of problem ever with any type of carb... still havent messed with the walbror as i dont care to have that kind of no warning not working problem if i dont have too! Good luck with it!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
