Default Broken rod

I have a 2165 with a 2 cylinder Vanguard engine bought new in 1996. It has always been stored inside and used to cut a 2 acre lawn. Over the past couple of years I have spent several hundred dollars on it including rebuilding the charging system, carburator and deck. Also the starter and solenoid was replaced last year. Last fall due to an unnoticed oil leak a connecting rod broke. As far as I can tell there is no damage to the block. I know someone who can rebuild it (probably) for much less than the dealer would charge which I was told would be 1000.00 -1500.00. I haven't tried to price the parts or anything so I don't have any clue what they would run. I assume I would go ahead and replace the rings and all gaskets and seals. The question is in everyone's humble opinion would you repair this thing or scrap it? I am torn as I really can't afford to buy a really nice tractor which would probably be in the 4000.00 to 5000.00 range. My only option would be to find something used or buy something at Lowes or Home Depot which I don't have a lot of confidance in. Thoughts??

Here are three possibilities for you. One is just an engine the other is a complete tractor.

If you want a ready to go tractor I have a 2284 Super for sale and we could talk cash and your tractor. PM me if this is something you would like to talk about.

Sam:

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my earlier post. I apologize that I am just now replying to you. Long story short my brother in law has given me a John Deere LX188 that he recently replaced with a new mower. My father in law bought the mower new so I know the history. The mower is in good shape and runs great so it is almost a no brainer for me to take it at least for right now. It does have several years on it so I'm sure I'll be back in the same boat I was at some point in the next few years. I think I will keep my Cub for now and keep my feelers out for a used engine somewhere in my neck of the woods (North Alabama). Again I appreciate your taking the time to offer me some advice.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
