Default 1250 with 1" spindles

I just noticed my 1250 it has 1" spindles. It is a later model 1978. Is this factory? The rest of the tractor is un molested. It's tore down at my father in laws rebuilding engine. Not a big deal, just happen to notice.

Yep, they changed to 1" front spindles partway through the QL series. I bet it has an internal brake rear, aluminum axle tubes, and the later 82 series style steering wheel, too.

Would an earlier QL have had a wide frame steering wheel?
I ask because I have a 1450 with 3/4" spindles but an 82 series steering wheel.

Yes the earlier QL's had a wide frame steering wheel. IH made lots of changes to the QL's during their production. They changed the front grille screen from one with a hole so that the muffler could stick out of it, to one with out a hole and the exhaust then just shot through the screen. They also had to change the muffler then too. They changed the gas tank to one with a bigger fill hole at serial number 560212. They switch from spring to machine screws to hold the grille in place since it kept falling out. They changed the steering column at serial number 530858 to one that was 1" longer. My book says they changed the steering wheel to the 82 series style in on February 28, 1975. They changed the spindles at serial number 632502 to the 1" diameter ones. The check valves were changed at serial number 590522 on the 1450 and 1650 and at 597245 for the 1250. They switched from the manual valves to the autos. The drive shaft was changed on the hydros at serial number 622952. They eliminated the ball at the end, lengthened the shaft and added a flex coupler. They switched from external disc brakes to internal brakes at one point. And the last change I know of, they changed the way the sleeve hitch yoke mounts to the frame. They quit welding bushings on the frame and started using "Frankenstein Bolts" to mount the yoke. Earlier models used the rod just like the 1x8/1x9 series did.

Hope this helps.

AJ

All that information came from Ken Updike's book; Farmall Cub and Cub Cadet. Grat book for the Cub Cadet collecter.

I had a 1250, that was built in March of 1975 and it had the steering wheel, like the older wide frames used.

My 1450 built in 76 has the older steering wheel, 3/4" spindles, and internal brakes. I don't care about any of it other than the internal brakes which I really like. From my dealings with internal brakes I would always choose the internal brake over any disc etc, this does not mean anything is wrong with the other types, I just think the internal brake is a better, longer lasting, design.... which I'm sure others have different opinions about.

Now how hard is it to find front wheels for the 1" spindles if I ever decided to upgrade ?

clint, I think all you have to do to go from 3/4 to 1" is change the bearing.

Another thing I like about internal brakes is you don't have to worry about what you drive through, or ice.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
