2284 hydro trouble
Come here seeking help of the brain trust. My never ending list of 2284 issues is getting smaller, but this is a BIG problem. My hydro loses/gains speed at a ridiculous amount depending on if you are going up or down hill. Flat ground (which I don't have much of) it holds great. You can turn up hill or down hill and gain/lose speed by 1/3-1/3--I am not exaggerating, its pathetic how bad it is. Yes I know this is not cruise control, but my 2072 and 1811 hold speed very respectably.
Little back story. This has been an issue ever since I got the machine about 3 years ago, but it seems to have gotten worse late last year. Last winter I had the trans. all apart to clean it, change gaskets/seals, and put in a bushing. It went back together with a new CCC filter and Deere HyGard oil (same stuff I run in my other hydros with no problem). It was a PAIN to get any reverse speed, yes I am aware of the service bulletins about drilling another hole, etc. I finally got some decent reverse speed before the season started, but it was fickle as could be to get it set. I have not seen anything horrible with linkages. Yesterday I drove it around with the tunnel cover off to see if I could see anything moving and I did not. It varies the speed, be it hold or cold operating temp. The only other thing is the steering will wander slightly, but I assume that is in the cylinder--its not bad enough to fix yet. I've got a copy of service manual somewhere and no I haven't dove into it yet. Just thought I would toss this out there first. For the record, it did not perform well with the old oil and filter, so I don't think changing them again will solve anything. I seem to recall the old oil was dark, but don't hold me to it. Pressure relief valves? Linkage issues? Hook into the system and check hydraulic pressure? I'm out of ideas gentlemen.

The 2284 had the typical Sundstrand Hydro Transmission.
Attached is an image from the Parts Manual. Focusing in on the image, there has to be NO slop in the Red and Blue areas. The Red area is where I would start looking at the "slot" with two discs and two springs. Wear in this area, is common after 30 Yrs. Next, the tie rod ends in image area Blue tend to wear over the years.

I would check the area in pink.

I'll start with the lever and work my way toward the hydro--the handle is brand new

Check the slop on the damper plate where it's connected to the trunnion shaft. Mine was so bad it was causing the springs to move off to the side and get jammed up and it was causing me all sorts of problems. I kept chasing the problem with constant adjustments. Once a discovered it I added a shim washer to eliminate the slop and it's like new now.

The tension on the operating rod is adjustable I believe.
Parts # 8 thru 6 on the right side/end of the shaft. Did you mess with that area when you replaced the handle? I take it by "handle" you meant just #5? Does the shift handle and rod seem loose and sloppy? |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
