Olds stated I needed an axle from a 1440, (of which I have found,) the 3 turn box I'm still in search of because I'm not sure of what I need. I posted an e-bay item that was a steering column from a 1440 but with tilt and I assume a 3 turn box. All I need is for someone to advise me of what I need for the steering column or if have to modify the original steering column, I can work the installation out if I have the right parts. Again thanks for all the comments and advice.
Larry,

You need what is referred to as a CCC steering gear.. After CCC took over the Cub Cadet line they developed their own steering box and abandoned the Ross box that IH used.. These boxes are very similar to the Ross box but they have a much better mechanical advantage. We have one on a 1450 and one on a 128.. they make them steer like power steering.. you do have to turn the wheel a bit more but it makes a huge difference in the way they drive.. one of my boxes came off of a 1604.. the other one came from an 1811.. I'm not sure of the exact start date but somewhere around 1985 ish up thru 1989 will have a direct bolt in CCC three turn box.. the later 1990 and up cyclops boxes will work also but you will have to extend the steering shaft. They have a very distinctive ribbed case. Best mod I ever did to any cub cadet!

Thanks Jay for the information, can I assume that any of the tractors built during those years 1985 thru 1989 will have the type of steering column I need?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
