Default GT2544 belt issue

I just bought this from my neighbor and he had no problems with it. The other day I went to mow and the engine stalled when I engaged the PTO. This happened 3 times then the deck ran. About 5 minutes later the deck stoped and I found the PTO belt completely shredded. Thinking nothing of it, I replaced it and then 10 minutes later, the deck belt broke (this one wasn’t shredded. Took the deck off and inspected it. All spindles are tight and spin freely. Replaced both belts and mowed for 20 minutes and the PTO belt shredded again. Any help greatly appreciated as my lawn looks like a hayfield.

Couple things possible... How tight is the belt, what kind of shape are the pulleys in and the clutch. Is it the correct belt? If it's not wrapped or it has cogs in it it's the wrong type and will bind up and destruct quickly. You get way more life with a lot less grief with a good quality Kevlar wrapped belt. Why did the PO sell it? I wouldn't think he'd sell it to you being his neighbor with issues, but I've seen weirder things.
Any more info or pictures will help.

Have you inspected the pulleys, item 14 in the parts diagram.

Heres what I would do , first look and feel up behind muffler shroud whilst cold for anything , second check idler pulleys at front of frame to ensure they spin freely and have nothing that could cause grief , if as you say all deck stuff is in good condition did you make sure the belt had a 1/4 turn as it left the PTO to the idler pulleys and a 1/4 turn back before the double fitting pulley at the rear of the deck
If all is good just look to ensure belt is not rubbing against anything
Then level deck
Hope that is a start
A couple of photos may assist
I have a GT2550 pretty much same mower

OK, one more thought. Did you replace the belt(s) with factory belts?

Possible the original belt reached it's life limit, and the replacement was just a plain belt not up to the job??
If belt was factory replacement, then you have issues that have been mentioned in previous posts without me just rehashing the others thoughts.

Your problem should be visually apparent.

Hope you find it easily as belts are not cheap.

Actually, ALL of the belts that broke were older ones that came with the tractor; the two that were on the tractor and one spare PTO belt. I’m wondering if these belts were, as the last poster mentioned, beyond their useful life. I’m replacing with new Kevlar belts. We’ll see what happens.

Best to try the oem Factory replacement belt.

While some applications can use a dollar fifty nine cent hardware store belt, most applications that are 1/4 even 1/2 twists and running back side idlers will not last 1 mowing.
I am a thrifty person, but some places ya gotta suck it up and go for quality
or proven reliability.
other times a "will fit" part will perform just fine.
lawn/garden applications require severe duty belts.
A furnace blower or bench grinder not so much, a fractional HP belt will be just fine.

Hey ol George I use those $1.59 belts to hold up my pants
Also check the deck Idler pulleys are not wobbling on their mounts , both mine failed early on (cheap Chinese bearings)and got a factory update for both

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
