1712 has no power
I finally got to play with my new 1712 tonight after work. It starts great and runs smooth but has absolutely no power at all while mowing. I tried adjusting the carb but that didn't help at all. The motor seems to rev well but runs considerably slower with the PTO on. My 7hp 73 seems to have alot more power than this tractor. The motor does not smoke, miss, or do anything else it shouldn't it just seems weak. The fuel flow to the carb is good and the air filter is clean. Any ideas what it could be? It seems like a great tractor other wise.

Hello Dirtpusher, so if the no load speed is ok, it almost sounds like the governor is not kicking in to keep the engine speed steady under load. I had an Ariens snow thrower that with everything in neutral, the top end speed was normal, yet when trying to take care of 4-5 inches of snow with it, the snow was barely coming out of the chute and falling on the machine. The engine was acting like it was on less than 1/8 throttle. I reached over and was able to pull back on the governor arm and it blew out snow like it should. I brought it back to the shed and found the gov arm was loose on the gov shaft coming out of the crankcase. I performed a governor adjustment and that took care of the problem and no longer slowed to a slow slow speed under load.

I would have to agree on the governor statement. Either the throttle cable isn’t pulling far or hard enough or the spring going from the governor shaft to the pivot lever ( not sure what it is called) or the governor spit the weights off. Let’s hope that is not the case! Check what holes the spring is in on both levers too. Good luck

After messing with it tonight I'd have to agree with a governor issue. I'll probably see if I can pass it on to someone who wants to fix it. I'm a single cylinder guy and don't care to put much money into a twin.

It may just be an adjustment. Usually when the gear is the problem, the engine will run too fast.

Well I have adjusted it and all linkages seem good. The rpms run high under no load but falls off under load. Maybe I'm missing something.

If you set it at full throttle with PTO off, and push the hydro lever sort of quickly. Do you hear the governor working?

No I do not. I have also moved the governor arm with the motor running and it does not offer to fight back the way other motors do.

Dirtpusher, that does not sound good. As far as not wanting to fix the twin I can understand but I sure wish I wasn’t 2 states away or I would certainly give you what you have in it. Once those tractors are running right they are hard to beat.

If you have engine at full throttle and engage deck not in grass but in say the driveway, do the rpms drop in engine ? do blades spin full speed? What I am getting at is does just the load of mower running drop the rpms? or is it only when there is load from grass being cut?
