44" deck on a 1650 needs reinforced
My son has a 1650 with a 44" deck and he has hit something and bent the front of the deck shell in several times, usually the right side only. Looking for ideas on reinforcing that front edge of the deck. Also I am wondering if his cam stop for deck height setting is slipping. Anyone have problems with their settings not holding?
Should have saved the post where I saw a fellow weld a piece of pipe across the bottom of the deck. I don't remember exactly how he did it, but I thought it was a good idea. |

Sad to say, my son is sometimes hard on equipment. I have been telling him the deck is not meant to ride on the rear wheels. He goes through a set a year. Kids! You are never rid of them, no matter what age they are.

Nonetheless, I do remember seeing a post (somewhere) where a piece of steel was welded for support. I'll see if I can dig it up.

I have seen two modifications to the IH 44/50 series Mower Decks.
(A) I have seen one where someone welded 1/2" (or maybe 3/4") Black Pipe on the front edge of the deck to add rigidity and roll the grass under better. (B) I have also seen where someone added some angle iron (3/4" x 3/4" or 1" x 1") on the front edge also. That also added rigidity to the front of the deck. Quote:

The wheels I use are "aftermarket" ones that one can buy at TSC. Haven't used Cub Cadets wheels in years.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
