982 custom cab?
Anyone ever "modify" a Sims cab? Thinking of taking the slant out of the front of mine? Mounting it on a red 982 and thinking of making it resemble a 3688 IH with the flat front??? After all, that's what these 82 series tractors were modelled after was the 88 series. Anyone who does have a Sims cab already, do you find you enough foot room or is it cramped? That will be cut down if I am able to straighten up the front. Any other drawbacks of a straight front cab that I have not though of?
Think it would be great to have a matching 982 to go with my 3688 I bought this summer. Anyone have issues with too much draw when running lights on cab and wiper? Would be 3 or 4 white lights on the top of cab and then the grill lights as well. Only one wiper, in front. Not sure if a fan is required inside to keep windows clear or not? Thought and input wanted - good or bad Thanks!

More pics....notice how the front of the cab is now straight up and down instead of the normal slant that Sims cabs have.

Just need to lengthen the roof and slant the back of the cab some to mate up with the rear of the fenders and make it so I can bolt it to the frame in the center of the fender pan.
This is the tractor that these 82 series tractors are modeled after

I am very intrigued and interested in your project. Seems you have things planned out well. I like the vertical front verse the slant front.
As far as lighting goes, I think the key to your situation would be to go to LED lighting. It is about 10% of the incandescent amperage draw, thus allowing for more lights. Considering you want a (A) wiper motor, and (B) a windshield fan, seems the LED route is the only way to go, if you are staying within the OEM charging system. Keep us posted on your progress.

Sorry..... I'm an IH nerd. Cool project!! I like it as well. I do't like the slanted front on my cab either. I would like to redesign it too. I'll be watching. |

Looks like a very cool project! Here is a picture I found online from a redpower roundup. John, I have to disagree with you on the year the 82 series came out. Wasn't it mid to late 79?? Early 79 was still the quietlines. My 1200 is April 79. Cool pictures, keep us updated!

Now that you say that Brian, your right. It was 79. My mistake.
Still.... 2 years before the '88's. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
