Default 71 Repower?

I recently bought a 71 that has a 2" hole in the crank case. I will keep any salvageable part to use on my 72 if needed. I would like to repower this with a larger engine. I want to build a powerful narrow frame, and I have been watching Sam Mac's 71/121R project for some inspiration. I initially wanted to build a K341 similar to Kirk Engine's Killer Kohler build. I know these are hard to find. What would be another option to be searching for? Just looking for some other's input, ideas, previous experience.

How handy are you with a sawzall and a welder? Putting the Mag12 in my toy was a PITA because it has the deep sump but I had the engine just sitting around. Maybe these will give you some ideas of what can be done. Holler if I can help.

If it were me I would just build a 301 per kirks build and be done with it. There is a crap load of 301's around. I have done this same build but have yet to light a fire to the engine. Kirks build almost netted him 16hp on the dyno and it is still user friendly. I just picked up a really nice 126 I am going to drop my souped up 301 in it.

Thanks Sam, i appreciate any advice from experienced individuals such as yourself. I am handy with alot of tools, having them readily available is tough right now. I probably will go with a 301 and build it. Thanks for the input, do you know what a K301 will sell for? I do not see many cub cadet Kohler engines for sale up my way. I will probably just buy a cheap "parts" tractor.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
