Default 2164 Loud Screeching Noise

When I start the tractor it emits a very loud screeching noise. It sounds like metal on metal friction. This happened after I ran over a stick, but I am afraid the damage was cumulative and the last stick was the camel's straw.

The blade engage switch periodically ceases to function, so I jump the switch with a wire after the tractor is running. I don't think this has anything to do with the noise as the blades were not engaged when the noise began.

The noise occurs when the blades are disengaged and at idle as well as when the tractor is moving. It sounds like either the tranny or driveshaft is at fault?

Is this tractor worth saving? It is 19 years old with less than 200 hours. All maintenance is up to date. The engine runs fine.

I only use it to cut my 1/4 acre lot at this point.

Thanks.

First off. Sounds like you need to further inspect this. Does it make noise while idling? only when blades engaged? only when moving forward? reverse?

Got any pictures? any other issues with tractor?

What's your question?
I see a lot of statements, but no question. We would have no idea what is making the noise. You need to figure that out. I'm sure the tractor is worth "saving"..... but unless you know what's making the noise, no way to know how much the repair might be. Hell, you could just need to pull out the broken off part of the stick you jammed in it. On another note, it's a lot easier on your machine if you pick up the sticks instead of running them over.

I guess the only real question was "is it worth saving" My answer to this should have been... Nope.. Ill give ya 100 bucks and you deliver it to my house.

The noise occurs with the blades engaged or disengaged. I got scared and shut the mower off immediately.

The mower is fine otherwise.

I don't have the covers removed, so no pictures and I am sure the noise is not from an easily visible issue.

I am guessing any repair at this point is more expensive than the tractor is worth.

With the tractor off. Just look up underneath for a piece of the stick or where one part could be touching another that moves. Remove the deck if need be to get a better look.

You won't know jack until you go look. We can't see what's making the noise from here. We'll help you, but it does require you to do the work. Go figure out where the noise is coming from.

If you are not willing to help, don't post a reply.

For all you geniuses with 12 grades or less between you, it was the drive shaft.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
