Default New with a 102

Hello, I just picked up a 102 from a guy with a mower deck. It was at least stored in a garage but has been a few years since it was run. It's in decent shape cosmetically but when I turned it over the piston is stuck so thinking I need to do a rebuild (which is something I've never done).

I am fairly new to GT's in general (recently acquired a Deere 110) and hope to glean some info from you all on getting it going.

I looked up the gear case serial (385058) and maybe I am doing something wrong but couldn't find what year it was. Any help on identifying what year it is?

Welcome to OCC! That's not the serial number, it's a casting number. Serial number is on the back by the diff cover.

Lol, that's what I thought (on other cubs it was there). I'll check tonight and see what I find. Thanks.

welcome to OCC. Make sure the piston is what is actually stuck and not a rat nest or something binding up the flywheel. Could also be a valve stuck. Unless they get rained in, pistons don't usually stick. Did the guy say if it was running when parked? If you were able to turn the motor any before it stopped, I'm betting on a stuck valve.

Thank you. The guy said it ran great when parked. The piston head was dry as a bone when I looked through the plug hole. When I try to turn it over the fly wheel spins and air comes out he exhaust and the plug hole thoughts?

Welcome to OCC, congrats on the 102, looks great, should be an easy fix, I had a stuck engine on a 169 a couple weeks ago, turned out to be a big mouse nest.

Where do you suggest I look for that?

Also I looked on the rear where I've seen other Cub serial number but found nothing. Suggestions on serial?

You will have to pull the engine and remove the big flywheel shroud, the tag should be by the rear hitch.

You may want to go ahead and start a "working on it" thread in either the Kohler engine or IH Cadet section. I would go to the IH Cadet section as you may have several areas (such as your serial tag) to ask questions about.

OK, if you have air coming out the exhaust, at least the piston isn't stuck (or rod broke). To be sure, shine a flashlight in the spark plug hole and see what you can see moving. On some engines you can carefully stick a screwdriver or long piece of wire in the sparkplug hole and touch the top of the piston so see if it is moving when you roll the engine over by hand. Obviously one must be careful not to get something bound up when you do this.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
