Default New with 1872

Hello from SW Iowa folks.
I just recently aquired a 1872 that belonged to my father. I remember going to the farm auction where he purchased it about 25 years ago.
My father pasted away in 2001 leaving the up keep and maintenance to my brother and bro-inlaw. Over the years they have focused on just keeping it running shade tree style with out proper up keep; this has resulted it hacking some of the wires & splicing to get something to function.
Now for the problems I've inherited:
the PTO switch will only work by holding the switch up. (What switch do I need?)
after 20-30 minutes of mowing an inline fuse added between the amp gauge and switch blows.
I've replaced the clutch thinking it was the problem, and tried to trouble shoot the wiring but I need a wiring diagram for this tractor. Does anyone have one to share?
I also have a 582 upgraded to 18 hp kohler with hydrostat and a 782 not running at present.
If anyone could help with a schematic I would appreciate it.
Thanks Bob

Welcome to OCC Bob

I am sure someone here will have a wiring diagram for you. You can also look around in our technical sections. We have some service manuals and owner manuals you can download. If you want a really nice factory print manual check out our sponsor Binder Books. They make top quality manuals.

For more help make a post with your problems in the CCC/MTD GT section of the site to get more eyes on your problems. DWyane has given you some good info on the service manuals.

It looks like your going to take better care of that 1872 then your brother and brother in-law.

Default update on 1872 electrical prob.

Sorry about the delay in responding gents.
After making my pilgrimage to the chiropractor (snap crackle and pop shop (good one Duke)), I couldn't get back to the tractor issue for a couple days.

I did take some pictures, but they are too far away for detail, so will try again later.

After changing the elec. clutch, & several days of tracing and rerouting wires the fuse blowing issue was not resolved.
So I started diconnecting wires to eliminate them as possible sources (I'm a shade tree electrician).
With the blades running I can mow for up to 30 minutes before the fuse blows.

The fuse only blows when the black wire going to the stator is connected.
The next step as I see it is to pull the flywheel to check out the stator.

Anyone have a good stator for a 18 hp magnum kohler for sale?
Bob

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
