Default Help with Front PTO Mower Belt on 126

All: for some reason the front PTO belt that attaches to the center mower spindle/blade keeps popping off. It all started when a stick got lodged and it came off. I re-installed and adjusted and after about 30 seconds of running it comes off. I have checked the mower spindle and the tensioner pulleys and they all turn freely. If its helpful, the belt looks fine, and I also noticed that 2 out of the 3 times it came off it was also wrapped on top of/around the clamshell on the pto clutch. I don't have much hair left to pull out but I am getting close so any advice is appreciated.

Thanks, I have checked both of the pulleys (tensioner and belt adjustment) and both turn freely. Anything else I should be looking for on the pulleys?

Is it possible to get the belt too tight? I believe I have it adjusted correctly.

Are you using the correct 3/8” wide belt? My 100 had the same issue with the belt popping off when I first got it because it had a 1/2” belt on it that didn’t fit deep enough into the pulleys to stay on.

Yes, belt is correct. I should have noted that I have had no problem with the belt popping off until recently. A month ago I changed the pto clutch, put everything back together and it has run fine for several mowings until yesterday.

I am going to go ahead and start with the simplest option and replace the belt. I have the IH part number off of the belt but I dont have an IH or Cub dealer nearby. Has anyone purchased the same belt from one of the auto parts houses that can share a belt number. I figure they can cross reference but just want to be certain I have the right belt. Many thanks

Do yer self a favor and use the IH belt even if you have to order it on line.
A "will fit" belt that has to turn 1/4 turns and the twists in that application just will not hold up to the job.
There IH belt is designed for the job and will hold up.
The only other belt I find that holds up is a Goodyear INSTAPOWER as it is designed for those applications.
And if your belt came off the pulleys, most times, it will never stay on but for a short time after that, as some of the internal cords have broken or stretched.
BTDT and got the T shirt.

George is probably right about internal belt damage that you can't see but check the idler pulleys for alignment the brackets could have gotten bent when the stick got jammed in there. Sight down from the pto and see if they look in line with the pulley and then sight the idlers to the deck pulley. If they don't look to be lined up you can bend the brackets a little to bring them in line.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
