Default Stacked blades on 38" mowing deck??

Hi. This is my first post to the forum, and concerns the blade arrangement on a model 441 38" mowing deck, mounted on a 1225 lawn tractor. The deck spindles each have two blades; a 12-3/8" long straight blade, stacked at a right angle above a 19-5/16" long curved mulching blade. I'm replacing the mulching blades with a similar Stens model, and I'd like to know more about the short guys that are apparently part of the original configuration.
There are 5/16" side holes in the main blades that align with holes through the spacers and through a large round center section of the short blades, but there is (currently) no bolt or other means of maintaining any indexing of the short and long blades, thus they can and do migrate somewhat relative to each other in use. What is the purpose of the short blades, and should there be bolts through the side holes to maintain alignment with the new long blades when I install them? The short blades do have sharpened edges. Was this some sort of new magic in 1993?
I'd appreciate anyone's insight into this arrangement. Thanks.

First, welcome to OCC....

In looking the Parts Breakdown for the 38" 190-441-100 mower deck, it shows NO set of smaller extra blades. I am going to venture to say this was a PO home made fabrication.

My 1320 has the smaller blades like that too. I think they are mulching blades.

In checking the parts break down for your mower deck it only shows 1 set of blades. Did you buy the mower with deck new or used?

Hi Roland, and thanks for the reply. I wondered if perhaps it was some whoop-de-doo mulching kit installed as an aftermarket "enhancement". OTOH, the spindle shaft is 1-1/4" long, and if I removed the short blade and accompanying spacer, it would lift the main blade 5/16" up into the deck, and expose extra spindle thread below the blade retaining nut. It is also odd that the new blade has 5/16" side holes on 2-1/2" centers to match the setup I have??
I attached a second photo to show the parts in better detail. Thanks.

I am guessing it is a Third Party Aftermarket blade kit.

On the Stens blade your replacing, how did you decipher it to be the blade to order?
i.e. via your tractors manual?
numbers read off the blade your replacing?
number from partstree.com or cubcadet.com?
I noticed in the pics, it appears the center nut barely engages the threaded spindle. There should be at least a thread or two protruding when all is tight.
Or is that a threaded sleeve-nut-washer combo that goes in ?

Clean the area where it bolts up. Should be some part numbers or at least a manufactures stamp.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
