Default Paint Type

According to the paint color chart I should be using 483 Yellow and 935 White on my 149 given my serial number.

I have seen a lot of talk on here about Martin Senour Paint...which I have used in the past for various things, also used Dupont and PPG. I guess my real question isn't about the MFG, but what type of paint is best for a restore? Acrylic Enamel, Base/Clear ??? In my experience, I have had good results with the Acrylic Enamels, but durability comes into question.

Your Thoughts???

Can't go wrong with acrylic. Put hardener in it. Urethane is a good choice too, but I think Acrylic is harder. I wouldn't do base-clear unless it was going to be a show tractor. Clear coat doesn't tend to take the abuse given a tractor. You can, however lay clear coat over both acrylic and urethane as a UV protectant. If it chips, the underlying paint will be fine, just may fade.

Yes that is what I was thinking after I posted, but another question. My motor apparently at somepoint was swapped out, it is black would it hurt to paint the motor case with the acrylic? I have seen some here that have done this and left the head area black. Not sure what they may have used.

I think the motor will be fine with acrylic. It will probably burn around the exhaust port. The head is not supposed to be painted. Bare aluminum dissipates heat better without paint.

When you are referring to the head are saying just the top or the whole cylinder that is finned? Years back I did a rebuild on another motor that was in an old Troy RotoTiller painted everything but the actual head the red color and it seemed to work out ok. On a side note, I haven't seen anyone mention Dupont Paints, is it that they don't make the IH Colors or what?

I am referring to the cylinder head. You know, the aluminum HEAD. It bolts onto the top of the motor. The fins on the side are part of the block. They are called the "jug". You can paint the entire block.

I didn't mention any brand of paint. I use Dupont, and they make both acrylic and urethane. I usually use Duponts cheaper paint, NASON. I prefer Dupont above all the rest.

On a side note I have tried to get a couple rattle cans of paint to touch up some spots before we start the winter again till I can do a full on restore, but I am not paying $17 a can at the dealer...I have seen mention of it being at TSC, but to my dismay I have found every color of yellow but IH Yellow.

If your planning a restore I'd leave it alone. Far easier to remove surface rust than new paint. Cheap paint is worse. Plugs up sand paper.
