Default K301 replacement suggestions?

Hey guys wonderin what the best replacement for my 301 would be on 104 frame. Just broke rod(I think) plowing snow. Getting ready to pull head to see what let go, but something broke! Full of oil and wasn't workin her hard not sure what happened. I have another 301 out of a jacobson, are rods and cranks all interchangeable throughout K301 engines? Or would you guys recomend upgrade? I have an 18hp briggs horizontal shaft but kinda need it back together quick.

Leave the B&S on the shelf for another project.

Not sure what you're asking here. I don't recommend pulling the crank and rod from a used engine and transplanting it into a broken rod engine without rebuilding it. You'll probably have to look up the part numbers for the cranks to find out if they're the same.

If you're asking if you can put the Jacobson engine into your 104, maybe, but I keep thinking they used the wide base engines in Jacobson equipment (I don't know that for sure but for some reason that is what's stuck in my head).

If the base of the two engines are the same, and the Jacobson engine is drilled and tapped for a S/G bracket you should be able to swap one for the other to move snow with, even if the cranks are different because you don't need a pto for a front blade.

Poke around a little and see if someone has a $100.00 ten or twelve horse engine to drop in it to get you by for the time being.

The 301 from jacobson was rebuilt, but the pan is deeper than the one one cub, was wondering if the new parts that are in the jacobson would work in the cub engine as long as nothing but rod is screwed. With maybe a honing and freshening? I have never had these engines tore down any further than head gasket. I am looking local to see if I can find 241,301 to get me through winter. Was actually wondering if 321 or 341 would bolt right in?

John a 321 or 341 will not be a bolt in replacement. They have the larger flywheel and you would have to notch the frame for it to fit.

I'd say you really need to find out what's wrong and what's involved before thinking about what you need to fix what broke. Who knows.......maybe the rod isn't broken as you think .....or..... maybe the rod's broke and so is the block. Or maybe it's something so simple and easy to fix.

Leave the bs where it's at. Don't mix parts like that. If needed overhaul your k301. Do it once do it right!

You might be able to swap oil pans and use the complete Jake engine, the K series blocks have alot of interchangable parts, even internal parts can often be swapped. You do have to watch for differances in the output shafts, the pto end is part of the crank and maybe machined differantly, the output on the flywheel end(if there is one) is bolted on, some with two bolts and some with four bolts.

Broken conn rods are often caused by a failure with the lower bearing so theres often crankshaft damage aswell, but you can swap in a used crank/rod combo if you have an identical match in good condition, Ive done it several times.

Thaanks Lance. Thats what I was wondering. Been busy with work and dr. Found out a couple weeks ago that I have emphysema. Have to see specialist after the first of the year. Too many cigs and too much construction dust I guess. Will have some time to experiment after Christmas. Let the boys help tear them down.

Tim I will have to check back with ya afyer the first of the year. If you still have an engine I will take you up on that offer. Thanks.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
