Default Hello from Georgia

Hello from Georgia. This is my first time posting. Not only am I new to true garden tractors, I’m new to IH Cub Cadet. I recently bought a 125 that needed some work. Used to have a charging system issue, but because of this site I was able to get the generator system working. I’ve never seen a starter/generator before or a mechanical voltage regulator. It has a lift rod on the back and I fabricated a bracket to accept the sleeve hitch off an Allis-Chalmers that a friend gave me. It’s a work in progress at the moment because after about 30 minutes of running it will run rough and quit and be very hard to start back. I’ve eliminated an initial spark issue AND reliable fuel delivery. I have an in-line spark tester and spark seems strong and consistent when it’s cold as opposed to when it’s hot. That’s why I bought a new condenser and coil. Thoughts?

If I need to go to a different forum, please let me know; but I’m new and wanted to introduce myself. I tried to upload a pic of my tractor but the upload failed. I’m posting this from my phone. Is there a file size limit?

Thanks, Jay

Welcome!

I'd first throw a new factory recommend spark plug in it (even if you have a new one in it, they can be defective out of the box) to either confirm or debunk it. Worse that can happen is you end up with a spare that only cost a few dollars. With that being said your symptom does point to the condensor even though it's new... if you let it sit for a bit to cool (15-20 minutes) will it be stubborn to start then quit after a short time but be easy to start and run for the stated 30 minutes of you let it sit for a few hours or overnight?

The problem is a coil with a bad winding can do the same thing, the good news is you can test it's resistance when cold then hot (when it quits) to quickly get an idea if it's the issue. You can test the condensor too, there are good online tutorials to do so, I personally didn't fully understand it until I had a bad one AND a good one to test side by side. From what I learned condensors generally work or they don't, I was lucky enough to have one that failed when hot and worked when cool, only by replacing it did I confirm it was indeed the issue and that was after replacing the coil (original from 1969) for good measure.

I hope this helps some and someone else may have other things for you to look into also! Best of luck!

It will reluctantly start back after about a 30 min rest, start back quickly after a few hours. I ordered a new condenser and coil. I bought the same spark plug at O’Reilly auto parts that Norman sells on isavetractors.com

sounds like a coil issue, you want a 12 volt coil with an internal resistor for that, also make sure the plug wire is good and not breaking down with heat .

This is exactly what I went through with a condensor but as stated previously by myself and athomas it could be the coil also, please do us all a favor (including yourself) and only change one then give a proper test to narrow it down.

Turns out I’m having excessive leakdown around the piston, so much that it’s fouling the plug. I’m in the process of tearing the engine down so I can take it to a machine shop. I bought a shop manual for my Kohler K301 and my IH Cub 125. Between those documents, this forum and YouTube, I don’t have anything to worry about.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
