This is a lot easier to check than tearing apart the engine

I'm going to test that today. It's been raining, and I don't have a garage yet.

have you pulled the S/G belt to verify the starter generator spins fast and quiet unloaded? it should spin very fast, get up to speed almost immediately and be virtually silent. my 106 S/G had worn out so slowly that I never noticed until the day it would not start. I replaced it and was amazed at how fast my engine started afterward.

OK, I took your advice and took spark plug out. With the starter, it sales around like it should. Does this means it the compression release not working?

Could be the exhaust tappet was adjusted with the tappet sitting on the release tab rather than off the tab.

It was the little compression spring was off. I don't have a dial indicator so about how much should the exhaust valve be open? With the valve open I can shine flash light in the exhaust opening and see light.

I set the exhaust with the valve off the little tab. But about how far should the valve be open on the compression release? I don't have a dial indicator. I can shine light in exhaust opening and see light at valve .

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
