Right there along your lines Roland, and I didn't think of it before, there is an o-ring on the fitting just below the filter. The JIC fitting that the tube attaches to. That would be another potential problem area. I believe there is one on the lower half of the trans also, but I would think there would be an oil leak there as fluid would be on it all the time.

Start by verifying that the oil is foaming in the reservoir. If it is not, I don't think you are getting air in it. You may have a noisy charge pump relief. I really think your steering would be erratic if you were getting air in the system.

If you are convinced it is an air leak. I would start by replacing the filter. Even if you just did. Check to make sure the sealing area at the filter is free from nicks that would inhibit sealing.

If that doesn't fix it. Pull the charge pump and replace the O-ring and the front seal. (Replace the seal just for good measure.)
Sounds like a plan to me and thanks for the great pictures and explanation. I will post a followup if I have any sucess.

Default Whine in power steering

So I have a similar problem with my 1862, whines when working the power steering, no leaks, no cavitation, no trans fluid foaming, deck will lower by itself after sitting for a while. Everything is greased, filter changed. I copied and pasted a previous reply, but saw where the valves(? valves) go bad but are not available, so how do you fix this? Substitute valves, live with it???

"If the hyd lift goes down its either the valve or cylinder since the pressure has to go to the valve 1st easy way to check is take hoses of cylinder and cap them if it don't go down its the valve we had some issues with Cyclops valves they go bad and from cub they are nla."

Had the rod break off the piston on my 782. No external leak, but the deck would go down, then come up again when I'd select down . I think the cylinder would freefall down, the oil would go through the hole in the piston and force the ram back up again. Wierd!
