Default Repowering a 1650 Hydro

Hello ALL,
I just purchased a 1650 hydro, so I'm new to Cub Cadets and this forum. Just had a question on repowering my tractor. The other day my K301aqs let go and seized up, and I'm looking at doing a direct swap. I was able to find a motor for sale online and was wondering if this would be a bolt in application for my tractor. Thanks!

Welcome to OCC,,,

as far as the engine,,,
a 1650 tractor has a 16 HP engine,, or K341,,

the engine you have found is a 12 HP engine,, or a K301,,

Possibly the engine in your tractor is incorrect due to a previous engine swap?

That eBay engine is a little pricy, considering it is a small engine,,
maybe you would be happier with a K341,, or at least a K321,, 14 HP,,

there is no carb on the eBay engine,, we do not know what carb is on your engine in the 1650,,,

With the missing pieces,, you could be over $1,000 before you get the too small engine running,,,

First, welcome to OCC....

The listing you provided, is for a John Deere Tractor. When Kohler builds an engine for a tractor manufacturer (ie: Cub Cadet, John Deere, Wheel Horse. etc), they build them to the OEM's "specifications". Thus. a K-341 (16HP) have all the basic motor builds, there are numerous variations (crank, cooling, mounting, etc).

IT IS BEST, when replacing a Cub Cadet engine to make sure that it meets Cub Cadet "specs". Thus, you will have a trouble free drop in replacement.

Thanks for the quick replys! It did have a 16hp in it originally however it was replaced with a k301aqs which is in it now. I was hoping if I couldn't find another motor I could just pull all the odds and ends off my k301aqs and transfer them right to the motor I had listed.

Is there a good site to purchase these motors? Just want to get my tractor up and running again.

Thanks again

It seized on me, I got it free but now it cranks with no start and weak compression. I was turning it over the again trying to start it and it just seized again but ended up freeing it up again. I wouldn't be opposed to having this one rebuilt as it made great power and ran excellent when it was going. Motor seized all of a sudden no typical warnings.

Sounds like a problem with the compression release. I think you should investigate a bit more before you condemn the motor.

How mechanically inclined are you?

Rebuilds aren’t too tough on the K series, and parts are cheap and readily available.

I'm not too mechanically inclined but I've been exploring the full rebuild kits. The machines only doing light work so if I didn't get the 14 or 16 back on the machine it wouldn't be the end of the world. Anyone have any luck with the isavetractors provider for a rebuild kit? Listed at about $240

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
