Winch for trailer
I am in the middle of trading for a bigger trailer to haul my projects/tractors on. The new one is a 6.5 wide by 14 long with a two foot dovetail and a short ramp gate. I want to add a winch to the front but I'm thinking about how to power it. I use to have a car hauler with a 10,000 pound winch that used a dedicated deep cycle battery mounted in a box on the front. With the smaller winches what is the best setup for powering the winch that you guys use? Any replies and suggestions are appreciated!

I have a 7x18' 10K lb GVWR equipment trailer. Since a breakaway brake system is required, I use a battery capable of powering the winch and the brakes mounted in the trailer box. I seldom use the trailer so I just keep a spare battery around to throw in the box when I need to tow.

I will not need the break away box but that was kinda what I was thinking of doing. Mount a box up front then if I know I will be useing the winch just put a battery in it. I also have a very long set of jumper cables that would reach to the trailer but they are a pain to deal with.

Since I've towed in many states, I've always had a breakaway system. I thought TN required a breakaway system. Here is one article that sited the requirement for TN. I've never had the breakaway system checked by any LEO or agency.
Every trailer or semitrailer of a gross weight of 3,000 lbs. or more must be equipped with brakes that may be applied by the driver of the towing vehicle from the cab and must be of a design such that in case of an accidental breakaway of the towed vehicle, the brakes will be automatically applied.

This trailer will not have a gross weight that high. It is just a single axle utility type trailer.
If my state inspector found out I was violating any state rules she would probably pistol whip me if it was bus related or not.lol

Here is what I used on my trailer. I use a 2500 LB. or a 3500 LB. winch, with the same type of hinge setup. I have a 120 min. reserve capacity, 500 CCA deep cycle battery. I just hook up the + and - , and away we go. Works great for me.

That is a pretty big trailer to not be capable of 3000 gross.
I would think it has a 3500lb axle as that size is very common for trailers. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
