Default Found This 1650 Gem

Found this little lady on Craigslist near me. I picked it up for my brother because he wanted a 16 HP engine to have around for rebuild purposes and the price was a steal for just the engine. Well, I got there to pick it up and it turns out it's basically a NOS tractor. Doesn't even have 60 hours on the meter. 50" deck has never been used and the blade has seen very little use. No side panels or deck subframe, but those aren't hard to find. It even has a sleeve hitch. It's been sitting for a couple years, but it fired right up with a jump start. Looks like Jonathan is making out like a bandit on this one.

Nice find Lance. Jon is lucky to have a brother like you! Most brothers would keep it for themselves when the deal is that sweet.

Thanks for posting the pics and starting a thread for me Lance! He had all the pics and asked if I wanted him to put up a thread and I said "Sure!".

Yes, I'm looking for more engines so I can have more for exchange. Where I am in Illinois, 14 and 1650's are, like we were discussing in another thread, either total junk, or way too high. I really was just looking for parts only tractors that I could rob engines out of and either part or scrap the rest. All I need is good cores. Well, Lance can find so many more of those types of deals where he is than I can. He already went and grabbed me a 1450 a couple weeks ago that I planned to part. We honestly thought this tractor was the same kind of deal. Super cheap, and said it had been sitting a couple years. We thought, "Great! Another good deal. Wore out tractor, rebuildable motor." Lance calls me on the way home with it and says, "You're not going to believe this but, I think this thing is like brand new.". Finally got some pics of the hour meter, and NOS deck..... and we agreed it looks like it is basically a NOS tractor. Wish I could have been there to see it start up with a jump after sitting 2 years!

So..... I am not going to part this out. Guess I will just have to find another parts tractor to grab a 16hp from. This girl is going to get some TSC and go to work!

Lance is coming home next week, but now has basically two trailer loads of stuff to bring. So, not sure what I will have him drag. Obviously I am super excited about this deal..... but I need the engine out of the 14, and Lance would prefer to have a running tractor that he can move around, than a dead one. (Which I totally understand.) Believe me, he can't get all the stuff I've had him get for me, home. So, for sure, I will be making a trip out there before the end of the summer to get the rest.

Yes Stan, he is a great bro! For the record though, it is reciprocal. I've picked up two tractors for him that are here, and keep my eye out for other deals when I know he's looking. While he is picking up tractors for me, I'm building motors for his. As long as all goes well, he will be taking at least one new engine back with him and a 44C deck. I think the plan is for me to hold his two tractors here for him for lack of room at his place and because we are planning a custom build out of them. It may end up being a winter project for me. All in all, we keep track and try to stay "even". When one owes the other, we look for deals, lol.

Yep.... I'm pretty excited. I honestly would not have been looking for a QL tractor to keep, but sometimes you just get lucky.

Congratulations Jon! Glad you're going to clean it up and run it.

Oh, how could you not? I mean, we really think the hour meter is correct. The tractor isn't a barn find.... unfortunately it has basically sat outside, at least for 2 years. But it appears to be in good shape, and the deck! The deck hasn't ever been used! It's brand new! Yeah, once I got the pics, and Lance got it running with ease.... I was like, "Oh... well, I guess I'm not going to be parting that out." At least I'll have a second mowing tractor. Been wanting another for mowing, just hadn't had time to work on any of mine. Too many other projects this summer. I worked most of the winter on the 317 with the intention of selling it, but by the time I got it up, running and tried it out, I found out the engine burns oil faster than gas, so I didn't get it sold. I did use it though! Had to fill the crankcase 3 times to one tank of gas.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
