Ok ill check timing i talked with the old owner he said motor was rebuilt before he parked it . He parked it cause he was under the impression the valves were not set rite . So gonna pull the head and clean it all up inside also . Question if i shaved .20 off the head would it give me anymore hp and would it last for a few years or just blow it up

OMG. Did I say anything about pulling the head? Do what I suggested and see if you can make it run. Don't pull the head at this point.

Quit worrying about doing "mods", and looking for HP until you fix it. No, BTW, it's a waste of time to shave the head alone. Stay off the tractor pulling sites.

I wouldn't bother pulling the head till you get it running correctly, most cubs will still run ok if the head gasket is leaking. Did you try resetting the carb to the factory settings? If not i would do that and adjust from there. Try running it with the muffler off and see if it improves.

The muffler falling off shouldn't stall the motor, id set the carb to factory settings and see how it does. If you look in the manual section you should be able to get the factory settings, id also take the carb off and clean it to make sure its not plugged creating a lean condition. If theres any doubt about the valves being set correctly i would go ahead and check those as well.

"Factory" settings are just a starting point. Not saying that doing this is a bad idea, but considering the info the OP has given, I don't think it's a setting issue. I'd come nearer to thinking that it is either a plugged main jet, or a base gasket leak. I agree that the muffler falling off shouldn't have stalled it. Unless there is another underlying cause. IE: running lean, plugged exhaust. The sudden loss of a muffler could have caused it to stall under either one of these conditions.

To the OP, you never said you changed adjustments on the carb. Did you?

J mech is correct the factory settings are just a starting point but unless theres another issue like the carb is plugged the engine should run at least decent at those settings, if its still running hot then i would lean towards a plugged carb. Dont forget to check the valves just as a precaution since there may be doubt of with there adjustment.

The sight hole will be in the blower housing on the right side of the motor as your sitting on the tractor just above the frame.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
