Did you remove all SIX setscrews? There's two in each hole.

You might need a slide hammer and the PTO clutch removal tool I have in the "tools" section of my webpage...click on the link in my signature line.

Matt G, i went to your site, very cool. i am going to try your method. BUT, as it turns out i had 5 of the set screws out and i broke the ball off the allen wrench in the set screw. Any ideas on how to get the wrench ball out of the set screw?

If it isn't really stuck in there, you might be able to use a magnet. Otherwise, you'll probably need a collection of dental tools and things like that to try to pry it out. You might be able to shake it out if you turn the clutch so that hole faces down. I wouldn't use those ball-ended allen wrenches...they aren't very strong, as you've just discovered.

A less safe idea would be to put setscrews back in the other two holes and then start the engine and hope it throws the chunk of wrench out of there.

I think first I would try spraying brake cleaner in the hole to get any dirt/grease/crud out of there. Then as Matt said dental tools and picks, try to get it loose in the hexagon hole. You might try turning that hole to the bottom, tapping the pto with a hammer and try to dislodge it that way, perhaps blow in the hole with the air gun on your air compressor. No matter what method you try, when hitting any part of it, light taps will probably be much more productive that hard ones.

Good luck

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
