Default Rebuilding starter generator ?

Found parts on eBay for rebuilding my 149 starter generator. Is rebuilding smart or should I just buy a new aftermarket unit? And to anyone that has done this, is it difficult? Thank you for any info. Chris

Depends on what you mean by "rebuilding". Replacing the brushes and bearings is easy; changing field coils is a bit more difficult. I would rebuild the old generator...those eBay ones are probably not the highest quality.

Well, it could be a lot of things. It might not even be the starter/generator. Before you go replacing things, figure out what's wrong first. I've had just about every possible failure...bad field coil, shorted armature, etc. I think there should be some info on these in the Technical Library... Roland/Myron/Wild Bill should be able to point you in the right direction there.

I have a good starter shop in town that I take stuff to that I suspect is bad, and they have the appropriate equipment to check the field coils and armature.

I agree with Matt. From my experience and beliefs, that it is better to repair (or rebuild) the S/G you have, than to buy one of those aftermarket specials one often sees on the popular auction sites. The Delco-Remy unit was made here in the USA and can still be fixed. Those aftermarket ones come with instructions for multiple languages and a set of Chop Sticks. Makes me wonder.....

When you rebuild make sure you use a real fine emery cloth on the commutator and clean all the (sp) oxiadation off it. Its very important to clean it up real good when your done, use a electrical contact cleaner, alchol based, spray it off and then compressed air.do NOT use steel wool!!
Epay sells the brushes and bearings also for the rebuild although you may possibly get a better quality product from a speacialist in your area.

I just got the S/G for my 127 rebuilt (bad field coil), new coils, brushes, bearings, cleaned, and painted was $121.00 including CT sales tax. Had it back in a few day's.

I see Ct.sales tax included where did you take your S/G?I live in Thompson that's right in the farthest North Eastern corner of Ct.on the Mass., R.I.line
