Restorations and Serial Number Tag Question
Just wondering if there is a common practice in the IH Cub restoration business of mixing frames, engines, tranny's etc from various tractors and making a "new" cub and removing the serial number tags on the side of the frame and tranny? It appears that several photos I've seen of restored cubs over the last several months that many of them don't have the serial number tags on them. I'm looking to buy an older one, and I want an authentic model and not a made up one. Any comments are appreciated.

The serial tag is only located in one place given any particular series. They are not all in the same location, and the moved tag locations during production runs on a couple series. They are not cars. The engines, frames, transmissions are not all "tagged". So, no way to really know if a part has been swapped. Even if it has, no, it's not all that uncommon. Most tractors are original, but some have had repairs made with used parts.
Removing tags is not common. It's more likely, you just don't know where the tag is, and it isn't in the same place on say a 1X8/9 series as it is on a 1X4/5. |

Also, some of the oldest models like the cub Original did not have a tag, only a number stamped into the differential housing. I would suggest reading the book "50 years of cub cadet" it's a great resource.

If you get an old "real" Cub, you'll sell that XT3 once you figure out it doesn't compare.

I nearly bought an older Cub this year, but after testing the new XT3, it was so much nicer to drive and the build quality and price point in my opinion was very good with features that appeal to me for my current needs. I recognized that I don't have the space at this time to tinker with a 50 year old machine. However, when I get settled into my new place, I'll likely get an older one for the fun of restoring it and [likely] compare it to my new XT3... Tug of war comes mind! By the way, I just asked my Aunt if she still has the service manuals from the business. She told me once before, they kept all that stuff. So she is going to look around. Maybe I get them. |

Thanks for the book tip. I'll see if I can find it.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
