1650 Engine Conversion
I have a 1974 1650 and would like to convert to a new engine. Before I proceed, has anyone done this? I am also curious on the resale of my existing engine to offset the cost. It was rebuilt last year, I just would like the quiet, smoother operation and less exhaust fume smell that goes with the newer engine.

I am interested in this as well. Has anyone repowered a single cylinder Cub with a modern engine or does everyone just rebuild the Kohler?

I don't think you are going to gain anymore quiet or smoother operation with a modern motor. Quiet Line Cubs should have a smooth operation if the motor mounts and rag joints are in good shape You won't be able to use the side panels with most modern motors. You may have problems using the front PTO. The new motors don't have the grunt power like the old motor do. What the value of your motor depends on the condiation the motor is in. I am interrested in the motor. I need more infomation on it before I can make a deal. I will repower my old Cubs with the same style motor that came in them. It is your Cub......put what motor you want in it. |

I don't think you'll have any less 'exhaust fume smell' either...the modern CH18 in my 582 smells just as much as all of my K-series singles.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
