It's a direct replacement, the placement of the terminals may be different but just look at them, they are marked. Gen or "G" terminal is on the under side of some of the aftermarket ones rather than the side. I opted for an OE Delco one for my ir
Original, internal quality of inside components is obvious but they are also 40 plus years old. The napa one should work right out of the box with no adjustment needed but always good to check charging volts anyway when done to be safe, I'm assuming you don't have a charge gauge on the O

No I don't have a charging gauge I'm assuming the regulator is the problem I can get it to run for a couple seconds then it shuts off but if I hold the starter button I can get it to run a little longer. I tried shooting starter fluid in to keep it running that does not help so I ruled out a fuel issue

sounds like you have a different issue not related to the VR,The motor will run without a VR connected. Time to read the free manual in the tech section to acquaint yourself with the O

Like the coil or points or condenser or key switch. The push button does the same thing as a starter solenoid. It's just a manual button, to control the starter. The key switch sends the power to the coil. Lew is right, better check the manual or a wiring diagram from the tech section.

Throwing parts at it and hoping they stick isn't how you find out what's wrong. DID you download the FREE service manual in the technical section of the site, and familiarize yourself with it?
As mentioned earlier, the problem could be caused by many different things. Was there a problem before you rewired everything? Or did this just start after?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
