Grandpa’s MF7
I finally got to bring home my grandfathers Massey Ferguson 7 this week. He bought it new in 1970 for $600. It has been in storage since the early-mid 90s. I have never even seen it before other than pictures. It is in surprisingly good shape, all of the paint is original except the footrests and tunnel cover. A bath and a coat of wax and it will almost look like new again. I know it was nice when it was parked, but I expected it to be destroyed since the building it was in is falling apart. Nobody has been in there in almost 10 years, and apparently someone broke in at some point. The original tires look decent but are going to need tubes. The seat is dirty, but still soft and only 1 small tear. The wiring all looks good. The engine was changed at one time, but we might still have the original one, I have to look around. One of them was rebuilt, but I don’t know which one. The engine is free, shouldn’t be too much work to get it running. I have a new carburetor that I bought for another project and never used that will work on this until I rebuild the original. I know it’s not a Cub, but it’s a neat little tractor.

There are two mower decks. The darker one that’s missing the roller is the original. I think it has a bad gear box since only one blade spins when you turn the shaft. The other one came from a friend who parted one of these out many years ago. Both blades spin on that one. We also found the chute from the 1320 he bought after this tractor, which I still have. I don’t need it since it has a mulching cover, but I always thought it was long gone.
This has an interesting design for the hood latch. You pull this lever down to “pop” the hood up, then lift it up to latch it.

That is a great looking machine. I know there are lots of these
cool tractors falling into ruin all around the country. It's super you have your Grandfathers tractor. Enjoy the ride. Ken

What a great looking tractor. The rear fender assembly is hinged and flips up for service! Genius!

Time for an update. I have been getting some advice from a retired small engine mechanic, actually the same guy the second mower deck came from. He recommended that I pull the head off and clean it all up before I try starting it. I’m glad I did because it was a mess, and all of the head bolts were not much more than finger tight. That is all cleaned up now and ready to go back together with a new head gasket.
He also recommended that I clean up the valves. He is on vacation this week, and I’m going next week so that will have to wait until were back. I could probably do it myself, but I would rather wait for him to help me so I know it’s done right. I have never done anything with valves before.

I haven’t updated this for a while since I haven’t had much time to work on it until two weeks ago. I got the valves cleaned and the motor all back together and back in the tractor. Tried to start it and it wouldn’t start. It was getting fuel and spark, but I didn’t think the spark was strong enough. I took it back apart to clean and adjust the points, then it was not getting any spark. I asked my small engine guy, he said he would look at it.
While I was waiting for him, I started cleaning it up and polishing it. It turned out pretty good.

The problem ended up being burnt points. We got a new set and put them on, and for the first time in almost 30 years, it started! I rode it around for about a half hour yesterday. It runs good and drives good in all gears. It’s a nice tractor, just a little small. Almost feels like a toy compared to a Cub Cadet.
