Default 1872 steering issues

Hi all, first post here.
As I have read and researched the forums, I have learned a tremendous amount and repaired it with the info you all have posted. One issue I am having, is my 1872 turns great to the left but only turns right about half of what left. The cylinder seems fine, the alignment seems fine, just wondering if this is a common issue?

thanks

It is your steering cylinder. The oil is blowing past the piston when you turn right.

No sir. Not a kit, just o-rings and seals. I have never rebuilt one but several members on here have cut them open, installed new seals and then welded it back together. I looked but cannot find one of the threads. Maybe someone else will have more time to look.

Jack the front end up enough for the wheels to be off the ground.
Then turn the steering wheel full left/right with the engine running.
Do you get full/normal turns?
you should, as there is no resistance on the cylinder.
If not, disconnect the rod end of the cyl, and manually turn the wheels with your hands to see if you have a mechanical reason they do not go full left to right.
if they turn normally when turning manually, you prolly do have a cyl that is defective.
No sense replacing a cyl if you have a mechanical problem.
I think you understand what I'm saying, if not ask.

Hello rabbittrap, welcome to the forum. I rebuilt the steering cylinders on my 1572 and 1772. I can't find the info I had on it right now, but here the link that got me started on rebuilding mine.

https://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/...light=cylinder

Not that bad to do. I ended up grinding the high spots off of the weld where the cap is welded on, then used a pipe cutter to finish off the job. Welding the top cap back on was very easy, other than the part where the spool of wire shattered in the miller-matic, and left me with a slinky on steroids.

I was looking at the cylinder last night. That seems like a good option opposed to spending $250 on 717-3041A/717-3041A-0637.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
