I looked up the 2 camshaft part numbers and there doesn't seem to be any difference between the 2... perhaps Kohler changed the part number for the camshaft somewhere in the production run?
This can be easily found out if the owner of the engine, would supply the Kohler "spec" number.

Thanks Roland

Jim, look at the serial tag on the engine for the spec number. Assuming the engine is the correct age for the tractor it came from the tag should look like this...

Default My best guess

My best guess on your problem is compression related. Pull the plug and turn the engine over. If it spins really fast, but continues to slow or stop on the compression stroke, pull the half moon shaped cam cover and check for a broken or disconnected spring on the compression release mechanism. Let us hear what you find out. Carpetbagger

I'm pretty much beyond that now - I'll be pulling the bearing plate, crankshaft, etc. this weekend. The ACR has it's spring, but it's got a broken tab. New camshaft is enroute here now.

I wish I could. Th PO had a PO had a PO, etc. The tractor was painted black & yellow when I got it if that tells you anything. As far as a SN tag and spec# - it had one, but it had been "cleaned" with sandpaper, as far as I could tell. Virtually unreadable. The closest I could make out was SN A918098, Spec 46858. I can't verify that though. Here's a picture of the blower cover with tag when I got it:

LOL. Yeah, with the help of a gear puller and impact wrench! No damage though...

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
