That was a common issue on the 3100 engine. There is an updated EGR tube to keep that from happening. The used engine probably had the updated tube. If the intake starts leaking, REPLACE IT. Not the gasket, the entire (plastic) intake. Very common failure. But usually doesn't ruin the engine.... but it can.

My brother keeps telling me I'll probably have BOTH the Cub and the Buick till I'm dead, or at least till I'm not driving or mowing anymore.

It can and did! Don't you mean 3.8 engine though? Mine is a series II. Was supposed to be a great engine. My dad had the same in his Park Avenue - never had problems. I tell people this story and they can't believe I still have the car! NOW I can tell them the story of the 47-year old Cub that might yet be resurrected (like a Phoenix out of the ashes....lol)

Sell the Cub and hire a lawn service to mow your lawn. Sit on the porch and drink a cold beer and have no worries about tractors.

Loaded mile means I only charge when the tractors on the trailer. Basically I drive out for free then charge $1.50 a mile for the return trip.

Actually not a bad idea...already had a lawn service mow once (same guy that does my neighbor)...lots of beer in the fridge....comfortable chairs on the porch...sounds like a plan.
