Default Replacement engine

The Kohler CH12.5 engine on my 1340 has died. After making a loud noise and coming to a halt it had no compression. On removal of the head I found one of the valve heads and the piston had completely disappeared into the sump. I now need another engine, rebuilt Kohler engines are like hen's teeth over here my question is is there an equivalent engine that I could replace my old one with.

This is from small engine warehouse's repower site:

There is no exact complete engine available for this. One of the original spec numbers was 1909. the replacement shortblock for the 1909 is the 12 522 05 if you buy a recoil start engine you can use the starter, flywheel, and alternator from the original engine to make this work for you and save money. You will need to use the drive adapter and muffler off of your original engine. You may have to use the oil filter bracket as well and the wiring could be slightly different. You may also need to change the front cover if the mounting holes are different.

Sounds discouraging. Might be an opportunity to retrofit a small diesel in there; I assume they are more plentiful on your side of the Atlantic?

I'm sorry to have used the incorrect terminology but the bottom line is my engine is no longer viable, the piston and valve are broken and the bore is deeply pitted hence the need for a replacement engine.

If it was my tractor I'd look for a used engine. Try the sponsors at the top of the page. The other option would be to re-power the tractor. You could drop the engine from a 1440 or 1641 in using the motor plate, drive shaft, and muffler and it's all bolt in.

Edit: Here is a used CH on Flea Bay for $150.00

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
