Default 1572 Surprise

This weekend, the 1572 I have owned since 1987 gave me a surprise. I started it up to do some spring yard work. While it started fine, soon after starting the ammeter started bouncing around showing a large discharge. I shut it down as soon as I saw this happening. Following the wisps of smoke I could not see when the fan was running, I found a short circuit. This was at the top left corner of the dash by the ammeter. The screws that mount/hold the dash panel are self-tapping screws. When I removed them, I was surprised to see the self-tapping screws had extremely sharp points on them like a nail and their long length extended right into the wiring harness that runs right past this point. It was strange to see that it took so many years to create a problem. I went and checked my 1772 to see if it was ok. The dash screws on it had blunt/flat tipped screws that were a little shorter, so it probably won't be a problem this that.
In the mean time, I ground a little off of the 1572 dash screws, removing the sharp point and making them a little shorter n the process.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
